Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (September 4)
Clear skies and light winds will be the rule Tonight as high pressure remains over the region. Lows will be in the 40s with some 30s likely away from Lake Superior. Patchy frost is possible by dawn, especially over the Iron Range, Arrowhead, and Borderland area. Winds will be out of the north or east at 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday and Thursday Night (September 5)
An area of high pressure will move off to our southeast which results in a developing warm/moist advection regime…This could lead to a few rain showers Thursday Night, but overall I think the majority of us will stay dry. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast with highs in the 70s with a few 80s in Western/Southern areas, it will be cooler near Lake Superior. Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the 40s and 50s in Northwest Wisconsin and in the 50s and 60s in Northern Minnesota. Winds during this period will be out of the south or east at 10 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Friday through Sunday (September 6-8)
A cold front is forecast to move through the Northland Friday Night. Ahead of this front expect southerly winds, warm temperatures and increasing amounts of moisture/instability. Dew points are expected to climb into the 50s and 60s on Friday with CAPE of 500-1500 j/kg. Convergence near the cold front looks pretty weak at the moment, but with the moisture and at least marginal amounts of instability around it’s not out of the question that we see a few showers or thunderstorms develop Friday AM in far Northern Minnesota, and in East Central Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin Friday Evening. Saturday looks dry as high pressure returns to the Northland. Most of Sunday also looks dry, but some showers are possible by Sunday Night.
High temperatures on Friday will be in the 70s and 80s with a 90 degree reading possible in Western/Southern areas. Lows Friday Night will be in the 50s and 60s. Highs on Saturday will be in the 70s and 80s with lows in the 50s. Highs on Sunday will be in the 60s and 70s.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
Still looking at a chance for showers or thunderstorms early next week (9th-10th) as a stronger weather system passes through the area. Could even see some severe thunderstorms over parts of the Upper Midwest depending on the timing of this system and the placement of key surface features. Stay tuned! Otherwise the rest of this period looks mainly dry. Near normal temperatures are forecast through this period.
