December 28, 2013 – Midday Weather Update; Wind chill headlines and lake effect snow advisory for parts of the Northland.

-Dangerously low wind chills move into parts of the Northland later This Evening.














-Here’s my final snowfall accumulation map for Today and Tonight.  The highest amounts should be over Northwest Wisconsin along the South Shore (3-6″+)  Probably 1-3″ along the Borderland, Arrowhead, and over most of the Iron Range.  Elsewhere I’m expecting snow totals to stay under 2″.

*WIND CHILL WARNING includes the city of Duluth*

Timing:  9 PM Tonight until 12 PM CST Sunday.

Location:  Northern and Northeast Minnesota.

Counties included in the warning:

Koochiching MN
Itasca MN
Cass MN
Crow Wing MN
Aitkin MN
Pine MN
Carlton MN
St. Louis MN
Lake MN
Cook MN

Some cities included in the warning:

International Falls…Bigfork…Grand Rapids…Walker…Cass Lake…Pine River…Brainerd…Aitkin…Pine City…Hinckley…Moose Lake…Cloquet…Duluth…Hibbing…Ely…Crane Lake…Two Harbors…Isabella…Finland…Silver Bay…Lutsen…Grand Marais…Hovland…and Grand Portage.

Wind chill values:  40 below to 50 below from late This Evening through Sunday Morning.

Impacts:  Exposed flesh could freeze in a matter of minutes.

**A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values.  This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken**

*WIND CHILL ADVISORY includes the city of Superior*

Timing:  9 PM Tonight until 12 PM CST Sunday.

Location:  A portion of Northwest Wisconsin.

Counties included in the advisory:

Douglas WI
Burnett WI
Washburn WI

Some cities included in the advisory:

Superior…Solon Springs…Siren…Grantsburg…Minong…Shell Lake…and Spooner.

Wind chill values:  25 below to 35 below zero.

**A wind chill advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills.  This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.  If you must venture outdoors make sure you wear a hat and gloves**

*LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY*

Timing:  8 PM Tonight until 12 PM CST Sunday.

Location:  A portion of the South Shore of Lake Superior in Northwest Wisconsin.

Counties included in the advisory:

Bayfield WI
Ashland WI
Iron WI

Some cities included in the advisory:

Port Wing…Cornucopia…Washburn…Bayfield…Iron River…Moquah…Ashland…Odanah…High Bridge…Mellen…Butternut…Gile…Upson…and Hurley.

Impacts:  Snow showers will increase in coverage and intensity This Evening with snow showers, heavy at times occurring Overnight Tonight through Sunday Morning.

Snow accumulations:  3-6″ with locally higher amounts possible.

Winds/visibility:  North winds of 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts.  Winds becoming northwest Sunday Morning.

**A lake effect snow advisory means lake effect snow is forecast that will make travel difficult in some areas.  Lake effect snow showers typically align themselves in bands and will likely be intense enough to drop several inches of snow in localized areas.  Use caution when traveling**
