Heat and humidity continued today in eastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with highs in the 80s to around 90 degrees while dew points ranged from the mid 60s to low 70s. Much cooler (Seasonable) temperatures across north central Minnesota with highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s. A strong cold front extended from central Lake Superior to eastern Minnesota to southwest Minnesota at 5 PM today with occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms occurring near and behind this frontal boundary today.
Cold frontal boundary over eastern Minnesota/northern Wisconsin will stall out and turn into a warm front as it lifts back toward the north tonight. Moisture and some instability near this front, combined with a strengthening low level jet out of the SW at 30-45 knots will result in occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight. Severe weather isn’t expected tonight, but some lightning and heavy downpours are likely near any thunderstorm. Lows tonight will range from the mid 50s to upper 60s.
The Northland will be back in the warm sector on Sunday as a warm front lifts north into Ontario Province while a cold front slowly approaches from the west — This cold front is forecast to be along the Minnesota-Wisconsin state line by Monday morning. Warm temperatures continue Sunday with highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s while dew points remain on the muggy side ranging from 60 to around 70 degrees! Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible in parts of the area Sunday morning, and again later Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Heavy downpours and some lightning will be the main threats from any thunderstorm.
Temperatures will return to seasonable levels starting Monday as will finally see the cold front move off to the east and out of the Northland. Showers are possible on Monday with highs in the 50s and 60s. Note: Keep in mind that normal high temperatures in late September are right around 60 degrees.
