Weather Synopsis
Arctic air remains over the Northland today. Early evening 850mb temperatures -26 to -28C. A ridge of high pressure ~1040mb extended from southern Saskatchewan Province through the northern Plains to the central Plains.
Tonight and Wednesday: Frigid temperatures continue with lows tonight in the teens, 20s and 30s below zero with near 40 below zero temperatures possible in the traditional cold spots. Highs Wednesday ranging from around 10 below to zero. Enough wind combined with the bitterly cold temperatures will continue to produce dangerously cold wind chills from 20 below to around 45 below zero through Wednesday morning.
Thursday: Light snow event on the way. Not much of a surface low with this system with just a weak surface reflection of ~1030mb, not strong at all, but there looks to be a decent amount of lift, and that combined with a surface trough moving east out of the northern Plains should go on to produce some snow in our area on Thursday. With a very cold airmass already in place, snowfall ratios should be on the high side, possibly around 25:1. Early snowfall estimates would have most of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin getting about 1 to 3 inches of snow with this system on Thursday. The good news is that temperatures will modify slightly with most of us climbing back above zero, finally!
