500mb forecast valid for next Thursday, March 15, 2018.
12z European computer model from 3.8.2018.
Goes-16 True Color visible satellite loop from today — Still a decent amount of ice covering Lake Superior although there isn’t much ice at all along the North Shore (Darker areas over Lake Superior) ~49% of the lake has ice on it per https://www.glerl.noaa.gov and this is pretty close to average for the 8th of March.
Mostly sunny to partly sunny skies in the Northland today with daytime highs in the mid 20s to around the freezing mark, this is near average to around 5 degrees below average for March 8. Surface map had a large area of high pressure stretching from the upper Midwest to central Plains with an upper level low covering the eastern Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, parts of the northeast U.S. This is resulting in continued NW flow aloft across the upper Midwest today.
High pressure will remain in control of our weather through the weekend with another chilly night ahead followed by seasonable temperatures on Friday. Lows tonight will range from the single digits below to teens above zero. Highs Friday will be in the upper 20s to middle 30s. Will have some clouds at times through Friday but still should have a fair amount of sun as well tomorrow.
There is a chance that a little bit of light snow or flurry action could affect parts of the Northland Saturday into early Sunday morning thanks to a weak trough extending north into the upper Midwest but this doesn’t look like a big deal at the moment. Highs Saturday are forecast to be in the 30s with highs Sunday in the 30s to lower 40s.
Note: Another shot of colder temperatures on the way for early next week (Monday-Tuesday time frame) followed by a warming trend mid to late next week.
