Weather Synopsis
Starting with some positive weather news — The Duluth Airport finally hit the freezing mark today with a temperature of 32 degrees at 3 PM (April 8) This is the first time at or above freezing since March 29, or about 216 hours ago (Give or take) Impressive to go that long with a sub-freezing temperature given the longer days this time of year, and also the fact that we had several days with lots of sunshine!
High pressure stretched from Manitoba Province to the Great Lakes with low pressure over the western High Plains this afternoon. Snow has been falling today from eastern South Dakota to southern Minnesota and Iowa with several inches of snow reported in some locations. Our area is far enough north from the low responsible in producing today’s snow, so our area stayed dry with just an increase in clouds.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies can be expected in our area through Tuesday. There could be a little snow mainly this evening over the southwest portion of the Northland (Brainerd Lakes area) otherwise mainly dry weather through Monday night.
Lows tonight will range from around zero and single digits above where skies clear, well lows in the teens and 20s are likely where skies remain overcast. Highs Monday will be in the 30s to lower 40s.
Tuesday’s highs will also be in the 30s to lower 40s, and there could be a few snow or rain showers in parts of the area as a weak wave passes through.
The first of two potential storm systems arrive midweek, the second one later this week. The first one for Wednesday is more of a clipper type system with most of the rain or snow affecting northern Minnesota the way it looks now, still some uncertainty with this system, and whether or not it will produce any accumulating snow or not.
The second storm for late this week could be a big one, but again there are differences in the storm track and also on how quick or slow this system moves through. The trend seen in the 12z run today is for a more progressive system especially per Euro model data, basically the Euro has come around to the GFS and Canadian models which have shown a faster moving storm compared to the Euro. Also have some concerns on what if any influence a strong high to our north will have on the storm track, will it shift it further south compared to what the computer models have been showing lately?
Computer models continue to show a significant winter storm affecting parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin especially for Friday, possibly lingering into Saturday. Several inches of snow (Possibly greater than 6 inches of accumulation) along with very strong east-northeast winds are possible with the strongest winds near Lake Superior where wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph could develop for Friday, lingering into Saturday. There could also be some ice accumulations with possible sleet or freezing rain. And even a possibility albeit a low one for some thunder on Friday. Weather could turn a little wild late this week! Stay tuned…
