Note: A pattern change is possible mid to late month, but this isn’t a lock just yet as other players could keep us in a pattern similar to what we’ve seen so far this winter, persistent warmth and transient shots of cold air. Time will tell…

Simulated radar forecast from 7 AM Thursday to 7 AM Friday.
A few flurries or light lake effect snow showers are possible Thursday near Lake Superior as winds shift to the E-SE, not expecting any accumulation, however. Then late Thursday night-early Friday morning will see another area of light snow affect far northeast Minnesota (Arrowhead region)
The setup for Friday and Saturday still looks favorable for some snow in parts of the Northland with heavier lake effect snow showers possible along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Weather Synopsis for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Skies were generally mostly sunny across the area today with more clouds over the Arrowhead and also along the South Shore of Lake Superior where lake effect snow showers occurred today with snowfall amounts of around 4 inches reported around the Gile and Hurley areas in Iron County. Highs today were mainly in the upper single digits to the low-mid teens (below normal for January 9)
Arctic high pressure ~1038mb was over Manitoba province this afternoon with a cold airmass covering the Northland with 850mb temperatures of -8 to -14C.
It’ll be a little on the cold side tonight but nothing out of the ordinary around here for January. Clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast tonight with lows from around 15 below to 10 above zero.
Partly to mostly cloudy Thursday with near normal temperatures with highs in the teens.
A weak northern stream low dives SE through the northern Plains later this week while a trough pushes east into the upper Midwest — This system should bring some flurries and light snow to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, starting in far northern areas Thursday night, then spreading farther south Friday night. Of more importance is a strong arctic high well to our north, winds will shift to the E with plenty of cold air sitting north of Lake Superior Friday night and Saturday, this should help develop some lake effect snow showers along the North Shore, possibly as far south as the Twin Ports during the Friday night-Saturday time frame. It will also turn breezy Friday night into Saturday with easterly winds gusting 15-25 mph around Lake Superior.
