Some snow possible Thursday evening-Friday morning

4:56 PM Monday, March 18, 2024

It looks like will be seeing quite an active spring pattern develop in the Northland later this week and possibly continuing through at least the middle of next week.

Since there are at least two systems of interest, to keep things simple, I’ll break down both events with two different blog posts.

This first post is on the Thursday-Friday snow chances which looks like a pretty quick hitting snow event with most of the snow we get in the Northland coming Thursday evening/overnight and continuing into Friday morning before the snow tapers off by Friday afternoon.

Snow will occur well north of an area of low pressure which is forecast to be over northern/eastern Wyoming on Thursday. This low will then track off toward the southeast through Friday morning.

An impressive temperature gradient is forecast to setup with this system on Thursday with plenty of warm air over the central Plains (60s and some 70s) while colder air (20s and 30s) covers the upper Midwest. A warm air advection type snow event should occur with this setup Thursday into Friday morning.

Here’s my preliminary snowfall forecast for the first system Thursday evening-early Friday afternoon.

Changes to this forecast are possible over the next few days.

Note: Will more than likely see a pretty sharp cutoff with how far north the snow will get with this system later this week so any shifts on the track of this system could mean more or less snow in some parts of our area.

European model forecast valid 1 PM Thursday to 7 PM Friday.

Snow in blue colors on the loop below.
