The main weather focus for Duluth this week is whether temperatures will rise above freezing on Thursday. At the moment, it’s looking likely, as low pressure tracks east through Ontario, sending breezy westerly winds and warmer air into areas south of the system. If the forecast pans out, northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin could enjoy highs in the 30s to near 40 degrees Thursday afternoon. But the warmth will be brief, with colder air set to return by Friday.
Note: The last time temperatures in Duluth rose above freezing was on January 13th, when the high hit 37 degrees.
It’s also worth noting that Duluth recorded an above-average day today, Sunday, February 1st, for the first time since January 16th. Today’s temperature departure was +4 degrees above normal.
Before Thursday arrives, colder air will make a comeback over the next few days, with subzero temperatures expected Monday night and possibly again Tuesday night. Lows will likely range from the single digits to the teens below zero in our area.
Duluth Airport recorded 0.4 inches of snow today with a total precipitation of 0.05 inches, giving a snow-to-liquid ratio of just 8:1, which is relatively low.
A few flurries will linger into the evening before we get a couple of snow-free days. No significant additional snow is expected in Duluth tonight. It’ll be breezy, with northwest winds picking up and gusting between 15 and 25 mph.
Snow showers will persist this evening across parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, bringing an extra inch or less of accumulation.

Very cold air is pushing far to the south today, with 850mb temperatures dropping to -3°C over parts of the Gulf and down to 0°C in Key West. According to the GFS model, these readings are about 4 to 8 sigma below normal, indicating an unusually cold air mass for this far south in early February.

With all that cold air sweeping over the much warmer Gulf and Atlantic waters, widespread gulf and ocean-effect clouds formed today.
