Around 73% of days this month in Duluth have been warmer than average, while only 23% have been colder — making this morning’s frigid readings a rare event for February.
A very cold start to the day across the Northland produced widespread subzero temperatures. Some of the coldest observations included -21°F at Ash Lake, -19°F at Effie, -18°F at Crane Lake, Cook, and Keewatin, and -17°F in Ely and Hibbing.
The official low in Duluth Monday morning, February 23, was -8°F, the coldest reading of the month. The previous coldest was -7°F on February 3.

So far this February Duluth has recorded 3 subzero nights, compared with a February average of 11 subzero nights — well below the typical count for the month.
Average February temperatures across the Northland through the 22nd are running about 6–9°F above normal.

- International Falls, MN: +9.2 degrees
- Brainerd, MN: +7.7 degrees
- Duluth, MN: +6.8 degrees
- Ashland, WI: +6.7 degrees

Note: Through February 22 the winter (Dec–Feb) average temperature in Duluth stood at 12.3°F, about 1.9°F colder than the climatological average. That modest negative anomaly indicates the season has been slightly cooler than typical overall, even though individual weeks have swung between milder and much colder conditions.
Duluth has recorded 35 subzero nights so far this winter, which is essentially on par with the typical December–February total.
