With April just around the corner, it’s a great time to review Duluth, Minnesota’s snowfall totals from 2015 to 2025.

2015: 1.2 inches
2016: 9.8 inches
2017: 1.9 inches
2018: 18.5 inches
2019: 6.5 inches
2020: 2.7 inches
2021: 2.3 inches
2022: 19.2 inches
2023: 11.9 inches
2024: 0.1 inch
2025: 9.3 inches

Note: In April, Duluth usually sees around 9.1 inches of snow on average, and according to long-range guidance, we could be in for an active month. The CFS model is predicting above-average precipitation in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. That doesn’t guarantee snow with every system that moves through, as it will depend on storm tracks and temperatures, but the signs point to a wetter-than-usual April.

In 2025, Duluth’s last snowfall of 1 inch or more happened on April 21, compared to the average date of April 12. The latest on record was May 19, back in 2019.

4 of the top 10 snowiest Aprils on record in Duluth have occurred since 2013, based on snowfall data dating back to 1885.

1st: 50.8 inches (2013)
3rd: 26.3 inches (2014)
7th: 19.2 inches (2022)
9th: 18.5 inches (2018)

Based on just 11 years of data, there seems to be a link between above-average April snowfall and below-average temperatures in Duluth. Since 2015, five Aprils with higher-than-average snowfall also had cooler-than-average temperatures, while five Aprils with less snowfall saw warmer-than-average temperatures. The only year since 2015 with both below-average snowfall and cooler-than-average temperatures was 2020.
