Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Today’s Weather:
Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies continued Today with high temperatures in the teens and lower 20s with light winds under 12 mph. Surface map at 7 PM CST featured high pressure of 1022 mb over Western Ontario Province while a broad low pressure trough averaging 1010 mb covered the Northern Plains.
Today’s Upper Level Analysis:
500mb pattern remains unchanged and very little change is anticipated for at least the next 5-7 days, possibly even longer than that. The pattern is blocked up with a persistent upper level low in place across Northeast Canada/Northeast U.S. with the upper low pushing west at times. A fast near zonal flow covered the Southern tier of the U.S., while a large upper level trough covered Western Canada and parts of the Northern U.S., this upper trough can’t move into the Upper Midwest thanks to the stubborn block to our northeast, thus it’s detoured west/south of our local area.
Tonight through Thursday Night:
Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found in our area during this period with a few light lake effect snow showers or flurries possible mostly along the South Shore of Lake Superior, accumulations if any will be minimal due to a very dry airmass. Snow associated with the Northern Plains trough will pass west-south of us Tonight and Tomorrow, several inches of snow are expected for parts of the Dakotas and Western through the Southern half of Minnesota where winter weather warnings and advisories are in effect. The northern fringe of this snow may push north to the Brainerd Lakes area for a time late Tonight/Tomorrow Morning with up to an inch of accumulation possible. Low temperatures Tonight and Thursday Night will be in the single digits below to above zero with some teens and 20s below zero especially Tonight in the typical cold spots. Highs on Thursday will be in the teens to lower 20s. Winds will be out of the north under 20 mph during this period.
Extended Forecast:
An area of low pressure will move west into Central Canada from Friday through the weekend, snow with this system looks to stay north of our area with just some flurries or snow showers possible at times across our local area. Another area of low pressure is then forecast to shift E/SE out of the Western High Plains late this weekend or early next week, but this system should remain south of our area, unless the N/NW 500mb flow can break down by that time which would allow that system to track a little farther north. High temperatures for Friday and Saturday will be mainly in the teens with lows in the single digits below to above zero Friday Night and Saturday Night.
