-11:11 AM CDT 8/9/12: TORNADO. 5 SE of Duluth, MN (St. Louis County) A waterspout made landfall at Park Point, the tornado moved over Sky Harbor Airport. 2 floats each weighing about 500 pounds were picked up and rotated. The tornado was 30-40 feet wide and the path length was 0.18 miles. This was an EF0 tornado.
-11:13 AM CDT 8/9/12: WATERSPOUT. 5 SE of Duluth, MN (St. Louis County) The waterspout continued after passing over Park Point for 0.54 miles before making landfall briefly at Barkers Island.
-11:19 AM CDT: 8/9/12: TORNADO. 5 SE of Duluth, MN (Douglas County) A brief tornado touch down at Barkers Island. No damage was reported. This was an EF0 tornado.
-12:20 PM CDT 8/9/12: 1.00″ HAIL. 5 N of Hayward, WI (Sawyer County) Occurred at Nelson Lake.

*High temperatures have stayed in the 60s for 3 days in a row August 8-10 at Duluth, Minnesota. This is the 1st time since May 29-31 with 3 days in a row where the maximum temperature has stayed below 70F.
*Record low temperature Today at International Falls, Minnesota. Low temperature was 38 degrees This Morning breaking the previous record of 39 degrees set just last year (2011)

Note: The winter forecast by the ECMWF is quite a bit different from the Climate Prediction Center. The EURO develops an el nino, with peak conditions expected during the fall with el nino conditions weakening by winter 2012-13, hence the large area that has near normal temperatures for the winter months.
Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Skies were partly cloudy to sunny Today with high temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s. Winds were out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph.
Today’s Upper Level Analysis:
An upper low/trough covered the Central-Eastern Great Lakes and portions of Eastern Canada with movement toward the N/NE per water vapor satellite imagery. An upper trough was over the Pacific Northwest and an upper level ridge covered portions of the Central-Southern Rockies and Western High Plains per RAP model analysis. 850mb temperatures as of 5 PM were right around +12C in Minnesota.
Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Tonight (August 10th)
High pressure will be in control of our weather with clear to partly cloudy skies with patchy fog possible late. Lows will be in the 40s and 50s, maybe a few 30s in the traditional cold spots once again. Winds will be light from the north, east, or west.
Saturday and Saturday Night (August 11th)
High pressure remains in control of our weather with partly cloudy to sunny skies Tomorrow, highs will be mainly in the 70s with west, north, or east winds at 5 to 15 mph. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies for Saturday Night with lows mainly in the 50s. Winds will be out of the west at 5 to 15 mph. A low pressure disturbance moving into the Northern Plains could bring some rain showers to the Brainerd Lakes area by late Tomorrow Night with better chances for rain west/south of our local area.
Extended Forecast, Sunday through Tuesday (August 12th-14th)
An upper level disturbance will drop SE across the Upper Midwest on Sunday and will reach the Southern Great Lakes on Monday. Rain/showers associated with this system should pass primarily to our south, but some showers may affect the Southern parts of our area on Sunday. A cold front is forecast to move across the Northland on Monday, a spotty shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out as that boundary comes through, but for the most part next Monday-Tuesday look dry at this time. High temperatures will be mainly in the 70s for Sunday through Tuesday with lows Sunday Night and Monday Night mainly in the 50s.
Long Range Forecast (August 15th-20)
A cold front is forecast to move through the region sometime between Wednesday-Thursday, August 15-16, rain showers and possible thunderstorms will accompany this frontal passage. A shot of real chilly air is possible behind this front for late next week, and there could be some frost, especially for the Iron Range, Arrowhead, and Borderland regions especially next Friday Night the way it looks now. Somewhat milder air may try to move into the Upper Midwest toward the 19th-20th, but as I mentioned yesterday the long range computer models have been struggling quite a bit lately as to what kind of pattern we get into as we move into mid-late August.
