-Keeping an eye on the weekend as there could be a light snowfall event setting up across Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Parts of the Northland could pick up several inches of snow this weekend with the area outlined on the map having the greatest potential based on current model data. Things could change in coming days so stay tuned.

Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
The cold weather continues. Weak clipper system passed through the area early This Morning with about a dusting of snow, otherwise the main weather headline continues to be the cold temperatures with highs Today only in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Partly to mostly sunny skies were common with winds from the west, southwest, or northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Late day wind chills were generally in the teens and 20s below zero in the Northland.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (December 10)
Another weak clipper system will be passing well to the south of the area Tonight with snow associated with this low staying over Southern portions of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Northland should remain dry Tonight as arctic high pressure continues to build in from Saskatchewan. Lows will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below zero with west or northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph.
Wednesday and Wednesday Night (December 11)
Frigid temperatures continue this period. Highs will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero with lows in the teens, 20s, and 30s below. Winds will be out of the northwest or southwest at 5 to 15 mph.
Note: Dangerously low wind chills ranging from 35 below to 45 below will develop across the entire Northland Tonight and will continue Wednesday Morning, and will redevelop once again late Wednesday Night into Thursday Morning.
Note: Light lake effect snow has been occurring Today over parts of Northern Bayfield County in Northwest Wisconsin with a report of 1.0″ of new snow in Herbster per NWS LSR. Expect additional light lake effect snow to continue through Tomorrow Night along portions of the South Shore as west or northwest winds continue. This shouldn’t be a major lake effect snow event, but a few inches of snow could accumulate during the next 24 hours.

Thursday through Saturday (December 12-14)
Light snow and flurries will be possible from Thursday Night through Saturday as a cold front heads south and through the area while high pressure sets up to our north over Ontario. An inverted trough type feature may also develop over the Upper Midwest/Western Great Lakes this weekend and this may enhance some of the snowfall near Lake Superior. N/NE wind could cause some lake effect snow on Friday mainly along the South Shore. The North Shore may get in on some lake effect especially Saturday as the flow turns a bit more to the east before they veer more northerly again on Sunday. Note: Gonna have to watch to see how things set up over the weekend as there’s at least a slight possibility for several inches of snow somewhere over NE Minnesota/NW Wisconsin. Stay tuned.
High temperatures on Thursday will be in the single digits and teens. Highs Friday and Saturday will range from around 5 below up north to the teens over Southern areas. Lows Thursday Night will be in the single digits and teens. Lows Friday Night will range from the single digits and teens below over Northern Minnesota to the single digits and teens above zero in Southern areas.

Light snow and flurries could linger across the Northland on Sunday (15th) A few more clipper type systems could affect the area between the 16th-20th with some additional snow. Below average temperatures are forecast during this period.
