Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
A potent clipper system moved southeast through the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest Today and as of late this Afternoon the center of low pressure was over Southeast Wisconsin (1000mb) This storm brought a widespread swath of snow across Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern Minnesota and over much of Wisconsin. The heaviest snowfall occurred in a band from Western through Northeastern Wisconsin and also affected parts of the Twin Cities metro, snow totals in that area generally ranged from 4-8″+ although totals in the Twin Cities varied anywhere from 1″ up to 5″ based on reports that I saw per National Weather Service Chanhassen, MN.
The Southern part of the Northland also saw some snow from this clipper with accumulations ranging from 1-4″ with a few spots probably picking up more than that.
We saw mostly sunny to mostly cloudy skies in our area Today with cooler temperatures compared to previous days. Highs were in the low to mid teens with north or northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 14)
Light snow that is ongoing in parts of Northwest Wisconsin late This Afternoon will be ending before 9 PM as low pressure moves east out of Southeast Wisconsin. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will occur Tonight with low temperatures ranging from the single digits and teens below zero to the single digits above zero. Winds will be out of the northwest or west at 5 to 15 mph.
Note: A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 PM Tonight for Washburn…Sawyer…and Price Counties in Northwest Wisconsin including the cities of Minong…Spooner…Shell Lake…Hayward…Winter…Exeland…Park Falls…Ogema…Phillips…and Fifield.
Wednesday and Wednesday Night (January 15)
A powerful low averaging 977-980mb is forecast to drop southeast out of Northwest Canada on Wednesday. This low as it moves southeast toward the Ontario-Minnesota border by Thursday Morning should weaken to around 986-990mb.
A period of warm air advection snow (lasting about 1-3 hours in any given location) should affect the Northland — spreading from west to east during the Wednesday Afternoon/Evening time frame. After this moves out, will likely see scattered snow showers and flurries linger Wednesday Night with even some freezing drizzle possible mainly in Western and Southern parts of the Northland.
Temperatures will be in the teens and 20s Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night in fact the high temperatures may not occur until Tomorrow Night. Winds will be out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts possible.
Note: Snowfall amounts for Tomorrow Afternoon/Night should generally range from a half inch up to 2″, the higher totals will likely be in Northern Minnesota and over the Arrowhead.

Thursday through Saturday (January 16-18)
An area of low pressure is forecast to move southeast from the Ontario-Minnesota border region Thursday Morning to lower Michigan by Friday Morning. As this system moves away from the Northland it will be followed by an arctic front which comes through on Thursday.
Snow showers and flurries will continue from Thursday into early Friday although I’m not expecting much more than a dusting to 1″ of accumulation on Thursday. We should dry out on Friday, and then another clipper system may affect the area late Friday Night-Saturday with some snow, although the computer models disagree quite a bit on that feature so stay tuned to later updates.
High temperatures on Thursday will be in the 20s and 30s with falling temperatures from NW-SE. Lows Thursday Night will be in the single digits below to 20s below. Highs on Friday will be in the single digits and teens with similar temperatures expected Friday Night. Highs on Saturday will be in the teens.
Note: Lake effect snow could increase in coverage and intensity Thursday Evening into Friday Morning along the South Shore of Lake Superior affecting Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron Counties. Could pick up several inches of snow in that area late this week.

Near to below average temperatures are expected during this period with possible clipper systems bringing at least a little bit of snow every now and then, but the general pattern does not favor any significant snow event anytime soon around this area.
