2nd coldest winter on record at Duluth, Minnesota

As of February 23, the winter of 2013-2014 ranks as 2nd coldest on record with an average temperature of 4.1 degrees. The coldest winter on record occurred in 1874-1875 with an average temperature of 3.7 degrees. With cold temperatures through the week I think will make a serious run at the number 1 spot. High pressure ridge averaging 1029-1037mb stretches from Alberta to Northeast Missouri late This Afternoon. Two batches of clouds were over the Northland Today, 1 area affected far Northeast Minnesota, the other was moving into Western areas. In between skies were mostly sunny. High temperatures were generally in the teens with west or northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts, but winds were quite a bit lighter Today compared to the last few days.

Tonight through Tuesday Night (February 24-25)
For the most part will have clear-partly cloudy skies through Tomorrow Night but there will be a period or two of cloudier skies over parts of the Northland Tonight. Might even see a few flakes near the Brainerd Lakes region Tonight. Low temperatures will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below Tonight and Tuesday Night. Highs Tomorrow will be in the single digits to around 10 above. Winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to around 20 mph.

Wednesday through Friday (February 26-28)
A few snow showers or flurries are possible on Wednesday as a reinforcing shot of cold air pushes through the Northland, not expecting much accumulation out of this, perhaps a dusting at best. Otherwise the big weather story will be the cold temperatures from mid to late week. High temperatures on Wednesday will be in the single digits and teens. Highs Thursday and Friday will only be in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Lows Wednesday Night and Thursday Night will be in the teens, 20s, and even some 30s below.
