Weather Summary for February 7, 2015
Location: northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
A broad low pressure system averaging 1004mb stretches from the northern Rockies to south central Minnesota This Evening with a stronger low of 1000mb over southern South Dakota. Another day that featured a very big temperature contrast with teens and 20s below from Ontario to Quebec while 40s, 50s, 60s, and even some 70s were common from parts of the Dakotas and southwestern Minnesota, south through the central Plains. The Northland saw highs in the teens in far northern Minnesota with 20s and 30s elsewhere. Partly to mostly cloudy skies were common Today with some snow at times affecting far northern Minnesota, Arrowhead, and portions of the North Shore. Snowfall accumulations were generally around 1″ Today with 3-4″ totals reported around Lutsen and Grand Marais along the North Shore. Winds Today were out of the east at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.
Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Sunday Night (February 7-8)
High pressure will remain well north of our area through this period while a couple of lows track well south of the Northland. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected through Sunday Night. There could be some patchy freezing drizzle and snow showers in southern areas Tonight with a few snow showers and flurries elsewhere. Sunday and Sunday Night could feature a few snow showers and flurries. Probably won’t see any more than a dusting of new snow during the next 24 hours. Low temperatures Tonight will range from the single digits below to teens above zero. Highs on Sunday will be in the single digits to the 20s. Lows Sunday Night will range from the teens below to teens above zero. Winds during this period will be out of the east or northeast at 5 to 15 mph with occasional higher gusts near Lake Superior.
Note: 850mb temperatures which were too warm for lake effect snow Today for most areas near Lake Superior except in far northeast Minnesota will turn colder from NE-SW through Sunday. H85 temperatures are forecast to drop to around -8 to -12C during the next 24 hours…This could result in a slight increase in lake effect snow shower coverage, but I don’t see this turning into a real big issue.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
Monday through Wednesday (February 9-11)
Generally dry weather is expected on Monday, after that will see a weak system pass through the area bringing a minor snowfall event to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin between Tuesday and early Wednesday. Highs on Monday and Tuesday are forecast to be in the 20s with highs on Wednesday in the teens and 20s. Lows Monday Night will be in the single digits and teens with lows Tuesday Night in the teens and 20s.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(February 12-17)
Near to below average temperatures are expected from the 12th-17th. A weak system or two could dump a dusting of snow over the Northland; one sometime around the 13th-14th; the other perhaps around the 15th-16th.
