Weather Summary for April 19, 2015
Location:  Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Early Evening weather map has low pressure centers of 996-998mb over Western Illinois and West Central Indiana with a 1002mb low centered along the Minnesota-Ontario border.  A cold front is moving into Eastern Minnesota as of 6 PM.

Widespread rain affected the Northland late last night into This Morning with generally scattered drizzle and light rain continuing into the Afternoon hours.  High temperatures Today ranged from the upper 30s near Lake Superior with 40s and a few 50s elsewhere.  Winds were out of the north, west, or east at 10 to 20 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (April 19)

An upper level trough digs into the Upper Midwest Tonight while deepening low pressure over Illinois and Indiana lift north into the Central Great Lakes region by daybreak.  A nice band of Frontogenesis has setup across Western-Northern Wisconsin late This Afternoon and this area should see fairly widespread rain Tonight.  Eastern and Northeast Minnesota will also get some additional rain Tonight with only a chance for some light rain in Northern areas in Minnesota.  Low temperatures will mainly be in the 30s as winds turn to the north or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Monday and Monday Night (April 20)

A strong area of low pressure will be centered to our north/east while an upper level trough covers the Upper Midwest.  Rain should continue into Monday Morning-early Afternoon hours in far Northeast Minnesota and parts of Northwest Wisconsin, some areas in Northern Wisconsin could see the rain mix with and change to snow before the precipitation ends.

Additional precipitation in the form of light rain and snow is forecast to spread south and east into the Northland Monday Night.

Highs on Monday will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Monday Night mainly in the 30s.  Winds will be out of the west or northwest at 10 to 25 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tuesday through Thursday (April 21-23)

Chilly temperatures through this period as a N/NW flow and cyclonic flow persist on the backside of low pressure which will track into Eastern Canada — Expect some snow and rain showers at times especially on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Note:  There is a chance that some parts of the Northland will pick up a dusting to a few inches of slushy snow between Monday Night and Wednesday, at this time it appears that higher elevated areas and locations inland from Lake Superior would stand the best chance for some light snowfall accumulations during the aforementioned time frame.

High temperatures from Tuesday through Thursday are forecast to be in the 30s and 40s with lows Tuesday Night and Wednesday Night in the 20s and 30s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(April 24-29)

Below average temperatures are expected from the 24th-29th with no major storm systems affecting Northeast Minnesota or Northwest Wisconsin.
