It has been a rather slow start to the 2018 severe weather season in the U.S. Not only are the tornado reports running well below average so far this year, so too are the reports of large hail and damaging winds.

Weather Synopsis
Northwest flow aloft covered the Northland today while a frontal boundary sets up from the central Rockies toward the Ohio Valley — This front won’t be moving much through Saturday and it will separate hot temperatures south of the boundary to much cooler temperatures near/north of the front, this front will also be where rounds of rain (heavy at times) with potential for strong to severe thunderstorms will occur from tonight through Saturday. Most if not all of this rain is expected to stay south of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with southern portions of Minnesota and central/southern Wisconsin getting the bulk of the rain through Saturday.
Cool across the Northland tonight under partly to mostly cloudy skies, lows in the 20s and 30s with a scattered frost threat early Friday morning.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies continue on Friday, a few showers possible over far southern portions of the area (Hinckley, Pine City, Hayward lakes area) Highs in the 40s near Lake Superior with 50s to lower 60s elsewhere (Warmest temps in far northern Minnesota)
Dry this weekend — Highs Saturday in the 60s, cooler near Lake Superior. Warming up Sunday with highs area-wide in the 60s to lower 70s; warming further on Monday with highs in the 70s to lower 80s!
