Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the Northland tonight with the greatest threat for severe weather expected to remain in southwest parts of the Northland including the Brainerd Lakes area.
Primary threats from severe storms tonight are from damaging winds of 60 to 75 mph and large hail to 1″ in diameter or quarter size.
A zoomed in view of the severe weather watches in effect, the northern most watch (severe thunderstorm) includes the cities of Bena, Walker, Remer, Brainerd, Aitkin, McGregor, Hill City, Moose Lake, Sandstone, Hinckley, Pine City, Danbury, Grantsburg and Siren.
An intense squall line with a history of producing widespread wind damage and hurricane force wind gusts continues to move quickly northeast out of west-central and southern Minnesota early this evening.
A very favorable environment continues ahead of this squall line with good inflow of warm, humid and unstable air feeding into this northeastward moving line of severe thunderstorms.
This line of dangerous storms is expected to weaken considerably later this evening as it approaches Duluth, with severe thunderstorm chances highest generally around the Brainerd Lakes area and toward Hinckley and Pine City this evening.
Note: Although a few thunderstorms are possible in Duluth later tonight these storms shouldn’t be severe, but heavy downpours and some lightning will be possible with these storms.
