Strong area of low pressure along with a mid/upper-level trough will move east out onto the central Plains on Monday before this system lifts northeast across the Midwest and southern Great Lakes from Tuesday into early Wednesday.
This storm will bring snow and possibly a wintry mix of precipitation to northwest Wisconsin with some snow for east-central Minnesota up to the Twin Ports. Most of this precipitation and the greatest impacts in our area will occur Tuesday into early Wednesday with precipitation spreading slowly to the north during the day on Tuesday.
North to northeast winds will increase on Tuesday with wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph possible through Wednesday. The gusty winds could lead to areas of blowing snow from east-central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin from Tuesday into Wednesday.
Storm Track Forecast
A large and strong storm affecting the Rockies and southwest U.S. today.
Goes-16 water vapor loop from Sunday, January 1, 2023 (loop time ends 3:06 PM CT)
Some snow, rain and a wintry mix will develop across southern Minnesota Monday, but this precipitation should stay south of the Northland on Monday.
It won’t be until Tuesday before we see a northward push in the precipitation shield.
For Duluth — Snow is possible on Tuesday, especially from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night. Timing on when we could see a steadier snow arrive in Duluth looks to be from 1 PM to 3 PM on Tuesday.
12z European model radar forecast valid 6 AM Monday to 6 AM Wednesday.
Snow (blue)
Wintry Mix (pink and orange)
Rain (green)
Should see a sharp gradient on how far north the snow spreads into the Northland on Tuesday as there should be a lot of dry air (brown colors on map) sitting over northern Minnesota while deeper moisture (green colors on map) attempts to push farther north out of central Minnesota and central Wisconsin, but how far north this moisture will build is still a little uncertain right now.
Here’s my preliminary snowfall forecast for Tuesday through early Wednesday.
A very sharp cut off from snow to no snow on the northern side of this storm, and this cut off could shift a little more north or south over the next 24 hours.
Currently I’m going with 1 to 3 inches of snow for Duluth, but there is certainly a possibility for somewhat higher snow amounts, with just as good of a chance for less snow.
Additional model runs over the next 24 hours will hopefully clear things up in regard to snow totals and how far north the snow will get.
ICE POTENTIAL
Some patchy freezing rain or sleet is possible on Tuesday in parts of northwest Wisconsin, but currently it looks like the greatest chance for more significant icing will be over parts of southern Minnesota into central Wisconsin.
