An incredibly wet September in the Twin Ports, here are the updated precipitation stats for September 2023 for Duluth (Airport location)
Stats below are through 4 PM Sunday, September 24, 2023.
Month to date precipitation total: 9.74 inches
Normal precipitation to date: 2.82 inches
Departure to date: +6.92 inches above average
Percent of normal precipitation to date: 345% of normal
Note — Duluth has recorded more precipitation this month 9.74 inches compared to what we saw for the entire summer (June, July and August) which was 7.17 inches of precipitation.
Going into September, Duluth had a precipitation deficit of -4.84 inches below average, but fast forward a few weeks, and now Duluth is +2.20 inches above average for 2023.
Duluth has tied the 24-hour precipitation record for September 24th with 2.96 inches of precipitation so far today. This record was set 150 years ago or in 1873.
Note — September 2023 is now the 2nd wettest September on record in Duluth. The wettest September on record occurred in 1881 with 11.52 inches of precipitation.
More rain is expected at times in parts of the Northland tonight and Monday with dry weather finally returning but not until Tuesday. The greatest additional rainfall amounts through Monday are expected near Lake Superior (North Shore area) as well as from parts of east central Minnesota into parts of northwest Wisconsin where we could see another 0.50 inches to over 1 inch of additional rain.
