A large winter storm will continue to track northeast out of northeastern Illinois tonight.
Although the center of the low is passing well southeast of the Northland, this storm will still bring some snow to the Northland tonight, but snowfall amounts have decreased quite a bit except along the South Shore of Lake Superior where higher snowfall amounts are still expected.
Gusty north winds will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow tonight and Saturday.
Blizzard conditions remain possible tonight into Saturday morning along the South Shore of Lake Superior impacting portions of Bayfield and Ashland County affecting US Highway 2 and State Route 13.
Here’s my updated snowfall forecast through 6 PM Saturday.
- Highest snowfall totals of 7 to 10 inches or more south and southeast of the Ashland area.
- 5 to 7 inches of snow in the Bayfield Peninsula.
- Amounts taper off farther west and south in northwest Wisconsin with totals somewhere in that 2-to-5-inch range.
- 1 to 2 inches of snow in far eastern Minnesota or roughly along Highway 23 from around Gary New Duluth south to Wrenshall, Holyoke and Askov.
- A trace to 1 inch of snow in most of northeast Minnesota.
Duluth area: Total snowfall accumulations of a trace to 1 inch tonight with some lingering flurries on Saturday.

Lake effect snow continues Saturday into Sunday morning along the South Shore with some flurries and light snow showers farther inland across the rest of the Northland.

Low pressure was located near Chicago late this afternoon. This low will track northeast reaching Lake Huron by around 6 AM Saturday. The central pressure of this low will continue to deepen from 985mb to 977mb tonight.
A couple of mid/upper-level lows and a broad trough covering the region today.

-27 at Cut Bank and Lewistown Montana with wind chills around -45 to 50.
84 at Miami and Palm Beach Florida with dew points around 70.
Note: An arctic air mass will be over the Northland this weekend into much of next week with afternoon temperatures in the single digits below to single digits above zero, while overnight/morning temperatures range from the single digits below to the 20s below zero. We could see slightly warmer daytime temperatures return mid to late next week, but subzero nights look like they will continue mid to late next week.
