It’s been a little snowy lately, but now it’s all about the arctic air, and this arctic air will be with us for the next several days, but warmer temperatures could return the week of January 21st with a chance that we could see high temperatures near or above the freezing mark in the Northland.
Wind Chill Advisory for all of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through Sunday morning.
Wind chills of 25 to 35 below zero are expected tonight into Sunday morning, and again Sunday night into Monday morning and additional wind chill headlines will likely be needed for Sunday night.
Tonight’s lows in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will range from around 5 below to 20 below zero.
Highs on Sunday will range from around 5 below to 5 above zero in the Northland.
A frigid pattern locked in for now, but the coldest airmass is farther off to the west over the Dakotas where temperatures at the 850mb level (~5000 feet) were sitting at around -33C this afternoon, compared to around -20C in northeast Minnesota, but that’s still plenty cold.
With all the arctic air and also dry air in place there really isn’t a whole lot of snow showing up in the computer models for about the next week or so, but it’ll be a different story downwind of Lake Superior in upper Michigan and far northern Wisconsin where periods of lake effect snow will continue for a while.
Here’s the NWS Blend of Models total snowfall forecast through January 23.
We might see the pattern turn a little more active again later this month, but at least in the short term there’s really nothing more than a few flurries or light snow showers from time to time with little accumulation.
EPS model 50-member snowfall forecast for Duluth through January 27.
