Minnesota and Wisconsin Drought Update: October 2024

Drought conditions are intensifying and spreading in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Currently, over 40% of Minnesota and 30% of Wisconsin are experiencing severe drought.

Precipitation anomalies for October 2024 thru the 23rd

Duluth, MN: -1.93″ below normal
Brainerd, MN: -1.91″ below normal
Hibbing, MN: -0.85″ below normal
International Falls, MN: -0.47″ below normal
Ashland, WI: -0.43″ below normal

Note: Since September 1st, Duluth has experienced a precipitation deficit, measuring 5.10 inches below the normal levels.

Here’s the latest drought monitor as of October 22, 2024

Minnesota

  • Severe drought conditions now affect 42% of the state, an increase from 28% the previous week.
  • Moderate Drought conditions now affect 86% of the state, an increase from 71% the previous week.
  • Ninety-nine percent of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions, an increase from ninety-seven percent the previous week.

Wisconsin

  • Severe drought conditions now affect 30% of the state, an increase from 20% the previous week.
  • The state is currently experiencing Moderate Drought conditions affecting 77% of its area, an increase from 63% the previous week.

In the past week, the drought has intensified by one category in the areas shaded yellow on the map.
