Warm Autumn 2024: Temperature Anomalies and Observations

The fall of 2024 has been exceptionally warm, with numerous states stretching from the Rockies to the upper Midwest experiencing one of the top five warmest autumns on record as of October 28th.

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Minnesota

In Duluth, since September 1st, there have been only 12 days with temperatures below average, whereas an astonishing 41 days have registered warmer than average temperatures.

In terms of percentages, 71% of the days since September 1st have experienced temperatures above the average, while only 21% of the days have been colder than the average.

This month, temperature anomalies in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin are ranging from +3 to more than +6 degrees above the norm. See below.

Brainerd, MN: +6.5 degrees above normal

Duluth, MN: +5.5 degrees above normal

Ashland, WI: +4.8 degrees above normal

International Falls, MN: +4.6 degrees above normal

Hibbing, MN: +3.7 degrees above normal

Note: This month, Duluth has experienced only four days with low temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Typically, October sees an average of ten days with lows reaching 32 degrees or colder. The record was set in October 2002, with 24 days.
