A surge of cold air is flowing southeast from western/central Canada directly into the Northland, bringing with it some of the lowest temperatures of the week expected tonight and into Saturday.
This afternoon, temperatures are plummeting to single digits and even below zero in regions of Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada. These frigid conditions are extending southward into much of North Dakota. This cold air mass will sweep over the Northland through Saturday, although we can expect a slight moderation in temperatures by the time it reaches our area.
Observations of the 850mb temperatures from Friday afternoon indicate minimal variation, with readings of -15°C near Chicago, IL, -17°C in northwest Minnesota, and approximately -20°C in parts of west-central Canada. This suggests a broad expanse of cold air mass.

The forecast for Saturday morning indicates that the low temperatures in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will be approximately 5 to 15 degrees below the typical range for late November.

Saturday’s high temperatures in the Northland are expected to be roughly 10 to 20 degrees below the typical range for late November.

The forecast indicates that wind chill temperatures in the Northland will range from approximately -5 to -20 degrees tonight and into Saturday, with the coldest wind chills anticipated from this evening through Saturday morning.
HRRR model wind chill forecast through 7 PM Saturday.
