It’ll be cold and windy tonight with some lingering light snow, and another round of snow is expected on Sunday.

Since Thursday evening, Duluth has seen about 4.3 inches of snow and 0.25 inches of total precipitation. With a snow-to-liquid ratio of roughly 17:1, it’s been a light, fluffy snowfall.

Expect a bit more light snow in Duluth tonight through Saturday morning, with up to an inch of additional accumulation.

Snow will keep falling thanks to a broad trough over the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, along with some convergence near Lake Superior. This convergence zone will likely boost snowfall tonight, especially along the South Shore. The North Shore might also see a bit of enhancement, though the chances there are lower than on the South Shore.

Northwest winds will stay gusty across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight and into Saturday, thanks to a tight pressure gradient between strong high pressure to the northwest and low pressure to the east. Expect wind gusts of 10 to 20 mph, with some reaching 25 to 30 mph. These winds will keep causing patchy blowing snow in parts of the Northland tonight.

NAM 3km model simulated radar forecast through 7 PM Saturday.

Through noon Saturday, snowfall is expected to total 1 to 4 inches along the South Shore of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, with an inch or less likely across the rest of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

…Sunday Clipper System…

Another round of snow is expected in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin on Sunday as will see another clipper system pass through the region. Around 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible with this system.

Note: Snow is expected to start in Duluth early Sunday morning between 4 and 7 AM, then gradually taper off by mid-afternoon.

After this clipper moves through, expect another round of gusty winds between 15 and 30 mph with blowing snow in some areas. Bitterly cold air will settle in by Sunday night and Monday, with lows in the teens to 20s below zero and highs staying below zero on Monday.
