Cold Sunday Morning and the Road to Duluth’s First 50-Degree Day

This morning kicked off March with a biting chill, as temperatures across much of northeast Minnesota dropped into the teens and even the 20s below zero.

Duluth usually sees about four subzero days in March, with the record of twelve happening in both 1965 and 1950.

Seagull Lake, Minnesota hit the coldest temperature this morning, plunging to a frigid -31 degrees.

On March 1st, our typical low temperatures range from the single digits to the low teens above zero, so this morning’s temperatures were much colder than usual for this time of year, though no new record lows were reached or matched.

In 2018, the first 50-degree day didn’t arrive until April 19th, making it a late year, while in 2024, it came early, with the first one showing up on February 5th.

In Duluth, the average date for the first 50-degree day is March 20th. The earliest on record was January 14th in 1894, and the latest was May 1st in 1917.
