Thunderstorms are likely to move into the Northland this weekend, especially from Saturday night into Sunday. Elevated CAPE, indicating instability, is expected to increase from southwest to northeast, with moisture pushing north. Paired with a low-pressure system and its warm and cold fronts providing lift, this setup will bring occasional rain throughout the weekend. But before that system arrives, let’s take a quick look back at today’s weather.

A fairly strong system moved through the Northland today. It was quick-moving and didn’t carry much moisture, but it still brought a brief burst of snow or a rain-snow mix to northern Minnesota and the Arrowhead, with rain falling farther south.

Note: Duluth received 0.07 inches of rain this afternoon.

The system moves east tonight, followed by breezy conditions with westerly winds of 15 to 30 mph, and a few rain and snow showers likely, especially before midnight.

Today’s satellite imagery of the system is pretty impressive.

Temperatures across the region today were all over the place, from the 30s and low 40s in northeast Minnesota to the 50s in parts of northwest Wisconsin, while southern Minnesota through central Wisconsin saw more comfortable readings in the 60s.

Duluth can expect occasional showers and a few thunderstorms from late Saturday afternoon or evening, continuing into Sunday.
