Forecast Discussion for Northesat Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin:

(Today’s Weather)

High pressure averaging 1034 mb was centered over Southern Hudson Bay Canada. A stationary front extended from Central Lake Superior through Southern Ontario back to Southern Manitoba to Southern Saskatchewan. Low pressure averaging 994 mb was centered over Eastern Alberta with low pressure averaging 1002 mb centered over Northwest North Dakota. Attached to this low was a warm front which extended from Central North Dakota into Southwest Minnesota.

Another very nice late Winter day across our area, but onshore winds overtook areas near Lake Superior which caused temperatures to fall into the 30s Today. Elsewhere, highs soared back into the 40s and 50s with a few locales closing in on 60 degrees late Today over Northwest Wisconsin. Skies around the area were mostly sunny to sunny Today, but there were a few areas of clouds. One area of clouds were heading east-northeast out of Western Minnesota, another area of clouds were lifting north-northeast out of Southeast Minnesota and Southwest Wisconsin. The third area of clouds were tracking southwest across the Western shore of Lake Superior.

(Upper Air Analysis)

A west to southwest flow aloft was in place around our area Today with a shortwave trough tracking east-northeast out of Southeast Nebraska and Northeast Kansas. An upper level trough covered the Pacific Northwest and Western areas of Canada with an H5 jet streak of 100 knots centered over Southern Washington and Northern Oregon and an H3 jet streak of 130-140 knots over those same areas. 850 mb temperatures around our area ranged from +2 to +6 degrees C This Afternoon with all the real cold air getting shoved north into Northern-Eastern Canada Today.

(Tonight through Monday Night)

Stationary front will remain nearly stationary off to our north while low pressure approaches the state from the west-northwest. A warm front and cold front attached to that low will head east across our area from Monday into Monday Night. Partly-mostly cloudy skies will cover the area through this period with lows Tonight and Monday Night in the 30s with some 20s possible near Lake Superior. Highs Monday will be in the 40s and 50s with a few low 60s possible. Cooler 30s will be found near Lake Superior. Areas of fog and possibly some light drizzle or light freezing drizzle could develop Tonight into early Monday, mainly around Lake Superior. Otherwise this forecast period looks generally dry.

(Extended Forecast)

Cold front will exit the forecast area by early Tuesday Afternoon with high pressure then building into the area by mid-week. Looks mainly dry around our area Tuesday into Thursday with highs Tuesday and Wednesday in the 30s and 40s with some 50s likely on Tuesday. Lows Tuesday Night and Wednesday Night will be mainly in the teens and 20s. The weather pattern could start to change around here toward next weekend as we could see a trough reform out over the Western U.S. How amplified this trough will be, the timing of systems coming out of this trough, and the tracks of these possible lows will be fine tuned over the next several days, if indeed we see this pattern unfold.
