March 2009 a month to remember

Information provided by the National Weather Service in Duluth, Minnesota:

March was a month full of extreme weather around Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin with three seperate storms affecting our area bringing with them heavy snow…heavy rain…a severe ice storm…scattered thunderstorms…high winds…and flooding…

Temperatures fluctuated from record setting arctic chill early in the month to a brief bout of record late Winter warmth just a few days later…

As of April 2nd, 2009…International Falls Minnesota has received 124.4″ of snow during the 2008-2009 Winter season making it the snowiest Winter on record at International Falls. The previous record was set during the Winter of 1995-96 when 116.0″ of snow fell… This by the way was the same year that Duluth, MN broke the seasonal snowfall record with around 135″ of snow.

In Duluth we’ve had 73.6″ of snow for the Winter of 2008-2009 so far…And were running 3.5″ below normal for the season as of This Morning.

March 2009 ended up being the wettest March of all time at International Falls with 3.75″ of liquid precipitation. The previous record was set in 1966 with 3.07″ of precipitation.

Two new daily rainfall records occurred at International Falls… The first on March 23rd when 1.21″ of rain fell and on March 24th when 0.63″ of rain fell.

30.1″ of snow fell at International Falls during March of 2009 with the bulk of that occurring during two powerful Winter Storms… The first occurred on the 9th and 10th when 18.8″ of snow fell and the second occurred on the 31st when 7.4″ of snow fell…This also turned out to be a daily snowfall record on the 31st.

New Minnesota State Record Low Temperatures occurred on March 12th when the mercury dipped to an all time low of -35 degrees at Embarrass Minnesota and Babbitt Minnesota…Both in the Northern part of the North Star state. International Falls Minnesota also had a record low temperature on March 12th of -28 degrees.

Just two days later on the 14th…Record warmth invaded International Falls Minnesota when the mercury topped out at a balmy 53 degrees!

Duluth Minnesota March 2009 Climate Summary:

Average Monthly Temperature: 21.7 degrees…Average: 23.6 degrees…1.9 degrees below normal.

Monthly snowfall total: 15.5″…Normal: 13.7″…1.8″ above normal.

Monthly precipitation total: 3.37″…Normal: 1.69″…1.68″ above normal.

March 2009 was the 10th wettest March of all time at the Duluth Airport… The wettest March of all time was back in 1965 when 5.12″ of precipitation fell at Duluth.

Warmest monthly temperature: 55 degrees on the 16th.

Coldest monthly temperature: -15 degrees on the 12th.

4 days in March had a low temperature at or below zero degrees.

18 days in March had a high temperature at or above 32 degrees.

3 days in March had a high temperature at or above 50 degrees.

13 days in March had a high temperature at or below 32 degrees.

Greatest 24 hour precipitation total: 1.35″ on the 23rd.

Greatest 24 hour snowfall total: 6.3″ on the 31st.
