High pressure overhead will bring another night of mainly clear skies…light winds…and unseasonably cool temperatures to Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Overnight lows are forecast to be in the lower to middle 30s with slightly milder conditions expected closer to Lake Superior. Some of the traditional cold spots could drop into the 26-29 degree range by Morning. Areas of frost are forecast to develop inland from Lake Superior late Tonight and early Monday.

A frost advisory means that frost is possible. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

(Today’s Weather)

Partly cloudy-sunny skies prevailed across our area Today with a real autumnal feel to the air with highs mainly in the 60s to around 70 degrees along with dewpoints in the 30s and 40s with PWS around one half inch! 850 mb temperatures as of 4 PM ranged from +5 to +7 degrees C. Winds Today were north, east, or northwest under 15 mph. Surface map late This Afternoon features a 1024 mb high centered over Central Minnesota.

(Today’s Upper Level Analysis)

Amplified north-northwest H5 flow was in place This Afternoon across the Upper Midwest with upper level troughing in place over the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes/Central-Eastern Canada. A disturbance was dropping south-southeast across Iowa Today but no precipitation has occurred near this system. An upper level low (576 meters) continued to move very slowly toward the east out of Oregon/Washington and was heading into Idaho late Today. H5 ridging has been squashed farther south compared to previous days with the axis of this H5 ridge covering the Southwest U.S. Today.

(Tonight)

Mostly clear skies are expected with another crisp fall like night in late August. Look for patchy fog and frost across our area mainly away from Lake Superior. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s but some 20s are expected once again in the traditional cold spots. Winds will be variable under 10 mph. Strong high pressure will remain over our area Tonight.

(Monday and Monday Night)

High pressure will remain in control of our local weather as it continues to sit over the Upper Midwest. Look for mostly sunny skies on Monday and clear-partly cloudy skies Monday Night. Highs Tomorrow will be in the 60s and 70s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 40s but some 30s are expected in the traditional cold spots. Look for variable to southerly winds at 5-15 mph during this period.

(Extended Forecast)

High pressure remains in control of our weather for Tuesday and Tuesday Night with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s with nighttime lows in the 40s and lower 50s. The area of high pressure from Tuesday into Wednesday will edge slightly more to our east while the upper level low currently across the Pacific Northwest moves east-southeast toward the Northern-Central Plains from mid to late week…This feature will bring some showers to areas mainly west-south of our area from mid to late week…Will also see a cold front drop south out of Central Canada from Thursday into Friday and this boundary could cause a few showers to develop across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin both those days…however these rain chances look very low at this time. High temperatures on Wednesday will be mainly in the 70s with lows Wednesday Night mainly in the 50s.
