Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Today’s Weather:
Low pressure of 1007 mb was lifting north-northeast across Eastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin This Afternoon. Plenty of rain has been falling Today on the west/north side of the surface low across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin along with overcast skies and unseasonably cool temperatures for mid May. Highs Today were only in the 40s to lower 50s with some upper 30s near Lake Superior. 850 mb temperatures as of 3 PM ranged from zero/-1 degree C in Northern Minnesota to +1/+5 degrees C from Northeast-Eastcentral Minnesota through all of Northwest Wisconsin. Winds Today were out of the east, north, or southwest at 5-15 mph with higher gusts, especially near Lake Superior.
Today’s 500 mb analysis:
Upper level low (552 meters) was centered in Northeast South Dakota This Afternoon per RUC model analysis with upper level troughing covering the Northern Plains and portions of the Northern Rockies. A 110 knot jet streak was located in Western Iowa/Eastern Nebraska late Today per RUC model analysis which was helping to generate the widespread rainfall that we saw Today. A warm upper level ridge of high pressure (588 meters) continued to sit across the Southeast U.S., toward the Mid-Atlantic and across portions of the Southern U.S.
Tonight:
Low pressure will continue to lift north This Evening and will exit to our N/NE Overnight. An area of steadier rain will affect Northern-Northeast Minnesota before 7 PM This Evening, then expect some areas of light drizzle and or light rain shower activity to affect parts of our area for the rest of the night due in part to the upper level low heading northeast from Eastern South Dakota. Mostly cloudy skies are expected in our area Tonight with lows in the 30s and 40s. Winds will become southwest or north/northwest at 5-15 mph.
Friday and Friday Night:
Low pressure along with an upper level low will continue to exit our area to the N/NE during this period, some lingering moisture around this system will keep skies rather cloudy on Friday, although some decrease in the cloudiness is forecast to develop from southwest-northeast by Friday Afternoon. A few showers will continue on Friday, mainly in Northern Minnesota, with dry conditions elsewhere. All of the area will be dry Friday Night. Highs Tomorrow will be in the 50s to around 60 degrees with lows Tomorrow Night in the 30s to lower 40s. Winds will be out of the north, west, or southwest under 20 mph during this period.
Extended Forecast:
An area of high pressure centered in Wyoming Today will track east from Friday into Saturday and will be centered to our southeast/east by the weekend. It does appear that the majority of this weekend will be dry in Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin with moderating temperatures. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the 60s to around 70 degrees, although it could be cooler at times near Lake Superior. Lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night will be mainly in the 40s. There will be an upper level disturbance tracking across the Plains this weekend into early next week, but most of the steady rain shower activity associated with that system looks to pass south of our local area, but a stray Afternoon/Evening shower can’t be totally ruled out Sunday and Monday across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.
