This was our shortest storm chase trip of 2010 (thus far) for Shawn and I as we only had to go northwest out of Duluth by 15 miles or so. A very intense supercell thunderstorm blew up between 2-3 PM CDT Thursday, June 24th, 2010 about 10-15 miles north-northeast of Grand Rapids, Minnesota…Eastcentral Itasca County. This storm tracked southeast and became tornado warned with reports of funnel clouds and wall clouds as it reached Southwest Saint Louis County MN. The severe storm continued on it’s southeast track, passing through Saginaw, Adolph, Hermantown, Proctor, Duluth, and Superior between 5:40 PM-6:30 PM CDT Thursday. This storm had an amazing amount of cloud to ground lightning strikes (CG’S) one of the better lightning displays I’ve seen around Duluth in quite some-time. This storm produced scattered amounts of wind damage in and near the Twin Ports, it also produced quite a bit of hail, generally up to 1.00″ in diameter. Rainfall was also extremely heavy with amounts ranging from 0.75″-1.50″ in under a half hour’s time, which led to some street flooding around the city.
