Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today’s Weather:

Patchy clouds and flurries developed in spots close to Lake Superior early This Morning, this activity decreased by mid-Morning with generally mostly sunny skies covering the area This Afternoon.  Highs Today were mainly in the teens to around 20 degrees which was a nice recovery considering how low the temperatures were last night.  Winds Today were variable under 15 mph.  Surface map as of 7 PM CST featured a 1022 mb high pressure ridge extending from the Arrowhead of Minnesota south to Alabama.  Low pressure trough of 998-1002 mb was centered over the front range of the Rockies while a 988 mb low moves into Eastern Alberta Province.

Today’s Upper Level Analysis:

Strong upper level lows covered Eastern Canada and Western Canada with upper level troughs in place over the Pacific Northwest and from Central Canada through the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast U.S. per water vapor satellite imagery and RUC model analysis.

Tonight:

Clear to partly cloudy skies with another night of frigid temperatures are on tap with high pressure in or near our local area.  Lows will be mainly in the single digits and teens below zero, but the typical cold spots will likely fall to the 20s and 30s below zero.  Winds will be variable under 15 mph.  Note:  There might be some scattered flurries that develop Overnight in parts of our area, similar to what occurred earlier This Morning.

Wednesday and Wednesday Night:

High pressure will be centered to our south/east during this period while low pressure passes well west-south of our local area.  Snow associated with that western system could reach the Brainerd Lakes, Pine City, Siren areas by Wednesday Afternoon or Night, although the greatest threat for snow looks to remain from Westcentral through Southcentral Minnesota where several inches of accumulation are expected for Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies can be expected Tomorrow with highs in the teens while lows Wednesday Night fall to the single digits below to above zero.  Winds will be out of the east or southeast on Wednesday with north or east winds Wednesday Night under 15 mph.  Could see some scattered lake effect flurries or light snow showers near Lake Superior during this period, but accumulations if any will be very minor.

Extended Forecast:

Little change in the weather pattern is expected through at least early next week, a persistent trough to our east will keep Northern Minnesota/Northwest Wisconsin in a N/NW 500mb flow with little chance of any meaningful snow events in this type of pattern, we could see some flurries or snow showers from time to time as weak disturbances drop south out of Central Canada from Thursday through early next week, but again nothing major is expected at this time.  High temperatures for Thursday and Friday will be mainly in the teens with some northern areas holding in the single digits both days.  Low temperatures Thursday Night and Friday Night will be in the single digits below to above zero.  The upper level pattern is forecast to undergo some changes by the middle or end of next week with moderating temperatures and a possible northward shift to the storm track, in fact the GFS long range model over the past several days has been showing a storm moving toward the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes sometime between Friday-Sunday, December 24th-26th, so that will be something to keep an eye on during the next several days to see if those trends continue to show up.
