Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today’s Weather:

Partly to mostly cloudy skies covered our area with highs in the teens and lower 20s.  Scattered flurries or light snow showers also occurred Today in parts of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Winds Today were out of the northwest or west under 20 mph.  Surface map as of 7 PM CST featured low pressure of 1006 mb in far Northeast Ontario Province with high pressure of 1032 mb covering Alberta Province.

Today’s Upper Level Analysis:

Zonal flow prevailed across the Southern U.S. while a persistent upper level trough and a N/NW 500mb flow persisted across Central-Eastern Canada south through the Upper Midwest and Northeast U.S., per RUC model analysis and water vapor satellite imagery.

Tonight through Friday Night:

Surface and upper level area of low pressure in Eastern Canada This Evening will retrograde (move toward the west) during this period, a few weak disturbances and some moisture wrapping around this system will spread clouds and occasional snow flurries/light snow showers south into our area through Friday Night.  There could also be some lake effect snow showers Tonight along the South Shore of Lake Superior with 1-2″ of accumulation possible.  Low temperatures will be in the single digits below to above zero Tonight and Tomorrow Night with highs on Friday in the teens to lower 20s.  Northwest or west winds are expected during this period at 10-20 mph.

Extended Forecast:

Low pressure will continue to push slowly toward the west out of Ontario Province this weekend, some clouds and flurries will linger in our area for Saturday and Sunday with highs in the teens to lower 20s with lows in the single digits below to above zero.  Low pressure is expected to pass southwest/south of the Upper Midwest early next week, snow associated with that system looks to pass south of our immediate area based on the latest model trends.
