Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today’s Weather:

High pressure of 1016mb covered Northern Minnesota late Today.  A weak disturbance embedded in the northwest upper level flow caused some clouds and scattered mostly light rain showers across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin Today.  High temperatures were generally in the lower to middle 70s with variable winds under 15 mph.

Today’s Upper Level Analysis:

Northwest H5 flow continues Today with Tropical Storm Irene pushing north through the Northeast U.S. into Quebec Province while an upper level low moves slowly E-NE through Oregon per water vapor satellite imagery.

Tonight:

Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found in our area with a possibility for a few light rain showers.  Lows will mainly be in the 50s with variable winds under 15 mph.

Monday and Monday Night:

A weak cold front will sink south and stall out over or close to our area by Monday Night.  Weak moisture and instability will develop near this boundary and this could cause a few showers or isolated thunderstorms Monday Afternoon into Monday Night.  Partly-mostly cloudy skies are expected during this period with highs Tomorrow in the 70s to lower 80s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 50s.  Southwest winds on Monday will become east or west Monday Night.  Wind speeds will be under 20 mph.

Extended Forecast:

Southwest upper level flow will develop by mid to late week which is a change compared to what we have seen the majority of August and it’s northwest or west-northwest 500mb flow.  Moisture and instability will gradually increase from southwest to northeast across the Upper Midwest and warm temperatures aloft (CAP) will also advect northeast out of the Western High Plains for Wednesday and Thursday.  Looks like will see an area of low pressure pass west-north of our area for Thursday and Friday…A cold front attached to this low is forecasted to pass through Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin sometime between Thursday Evening and Friday.  This system could bring some showers or thunderstorms to our area Thursday and or Friday, but how widespread these storms will be is uncertain at this time due to the potential cap that may move into the Upper Midwest later this week.  There will also be a risk for some showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday, that would be associated with the warm/moist advection pattern which will lift northeast into our area.  High temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the 60s and 70s with low temperatures Tuesday Night and Wednesday Night in the 50s to lower 60s.
