Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Today’s Weather:
Another warm day with high temperatures in the middle 70s to lower 80s which is about 15-20 degrees above average for early October. Cooler 50s and lower 60s were found near Lake Superior due to onshore winds which increased a bit Today. Skies were generally sunny, although there has been an area of low clouds pushing south into the head of Lake Superior This Afternoon, but for the most part these clouds have remained off-shore. Winds Today were out of the south or east at 5-15 mph with a few gusts to 20 mph.
Today’s Upper Level Analysis:
Large 500mb ridge covered the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, Central-Southern Plains and Rockies per RUC model analysis. Note: Widespread 80 and 90 degree temperatures were found under this ridge Today. A strong and slow moving upper level low/trough was in place over the Eastern U.S., this system brought some snow this past weekend to higher elevation areas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and North Carolina. Another strong upper level trough was moving toward the U.S. West Coast per water vapor satellite imagery and this approaching trough will cause a pattern change in the U.S. this week.
Tonight through Tuesday Night:
High pressure will be nearly stationary to our southeast while a cold front moves into far Northern Minnesota Tonight and Tuesday before it turns into a stationary front. Clear to partly cloudy skies will occur during this period with patchy nighttime and early Morning fog. Low temperatures Tonight and Tuesday Night will mainly be in the 40s to lower 50s with some 30s in the typical cold spots. Highs on Tuesday will reach the 70s to lower 80s in most areas with cooler temperatures developing along the North Shore of Lake Superior. South, southwest or east winds are forecasted during this period at up to 20 mph.
Extended Forecast:
Highly amplified weather pattern will continue through at least Friday as a slow moving upper trough moves across the Western U.S. while high pressure sits over Eastern Canada. The Upper Midwest will remain in a S-SW flow which will continue the much above average temperature trend this week. High temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday will mainly be in the 70s to around 80 degrees with cooler temperatures near Lake Superior. Lows Wednesday Night and Thursday Night will be in the 40s and 50s. Looks like we could get some showers in parts of our area late this week and weekend as a cold front settles south-east into the Upper Midwest.
Note: With the warm and dry weather for most of this week the fire danger will likely be on the high side across the Northland, wind speeds don’t look too strong into mid-week (generally <20mph), but wind speeds could increase later this week.
