*Latest information regarding the ongoing flooding in the Northland*

*Sandbagging has begun at Moose Lake and Barnum, Minnesota (Carlton County)  The sewage treatment plant has shut down in Moose Lake due to flooding.

*Highway 210 has major damage and the swinging bridge at Jay Cooke State Park has also been damaged due to the record flooding on the St. Louis River.

*The St. Louis River at Scanlon was at 16.6 feet as of 3:30pm Thursday.  Record flooding is occurring.  The river should begin to slowly recede.

*The Mississippi River near Aitkin was at 16.8 feet as of 4pm Thursday.  Moderate flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.  The river is expected to rise to near 20.5 feet on Sunday.

*The Mississippi River at Brainerd was at 15 feet as of 3:30pm Thursday.  Minor flooding is occurring.

*The Mississippi River at Fort Ripley was at 10.7 feet as of 3pm Thursday.  Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.  The river is expected to rise to near 13.8 feet on Monday, June 25th.

*There are several other creeks and rivers that are flooding or near flood stage around the Northland.  Numerous roads are closed and have been severely damaged by the flooding.

*Some evacuations have occurred in the cities of Floodwood, Moose Lake, Willow River, Carlton, Thomson, and Fond Du Lac, Minnesota.

*As of 1pm Thursday:  Only emergency vehicles were allowed to travel in Moose Lake.

*Damage estimates for the city of Duluth are at 50 to 80 millon dollars per Mayor Don Ness.

*A state of emergency has been declared in Lake County Minnesota because of the flooding.  Damage estimates are at 7 million dollars.

A 24 hour precipitation record occurred at Duluth, Minnesota on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012.  3.11″ of rain fell which broke the previous record of 1.77″ set in 1926.

Weather Tidbits:

*9.51″ of rain so far this month at the Duluth Airport.  This is 6.82″ above the average.

*Duluth’s precipitation total from May 23-June 21, 2012 has been 300-400% above what we normally would receive, in other words way above average!!!

Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Skies were partly to mostly sunny Today with high temperatures topping out in the lower to middle 70s.  Winds were out of the west or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.  A few showers have been popped up This Afternoon across Northern Minnesota with movement toward the southeast.

Today’s Upper Level Analysis:

A northwest flow aloft covered the Upper Midwest per RAP model analysis.  850mb temperatures as of 4pm ranged from +10 to +12C in Minnesota.

Tonight (June 21st)

There will be a few showers and possibly a thunderstorm before Midnight with weak instability in place.  Lows will be in the 40s and 50s with west or northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph.

Friday and Friday Night (June 22nd)

A northwest flow in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere will continue during this period.  Weak instability in place could lead to a few Afternoon-early Evening showers or isolated thunderstorms.  Highs will mainly be in the 70s with lows in the 50s to around 60 degrees.  Winds will be from the west at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast, Saturday-Monday (June 23rd-25th)

A cold front will drop south/east through our area from Saturday into early Sunday with a few showers or thunderstorms possible in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Looks mainly dry from Sunday Afternoon into Monday.  High temperatures will mainly be in the 70s during this period with lows in the 50s Saturday Night and the 40s and 50s for Sunday Night.
