Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Strong northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph occurred Today near Lake Superior as the marine layer strengthened.  A stationary front was down along the Minnesota-Iowa border with a couple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms occurring along and north of that front from Central, Eastern, and Southern Minnesota into portions of Wisconsin.  The northern edge of This Morning’s thunderstorm complex did affect Southern parts of the Duluth area, generally south of a line from Leader, Minnesota to Park Falls, Wisconsin with some decent rainfall per doppler radar estimates.  The warmest temperatures Today were in far Northern Minnesota with mid 70s to lower 80s, elsewhere highs were in the 60s and 70s which is actually a little below average for a change.  Dew points were in the 50s and 60s with upper 40s nosing into the Arrowhead.  Winds away from Lake Superior were out of the east at 5 to 15 mph.

-Doppler radar rainfall estimates from Today.  Some decent rainfall totals in Southern parts of our area Today, generally in the 1/4-1/2″ range, but a few spots picked up >1.00″ of rain.

Today’s Upper Level Analysis:

Upper troughs were over Eastern Canada and west of the Rockies with an upper level ridge extending from the Rockies, east through the Plains, Southern U.S., Ohio Valley, and Eastern U.S per RAP model analysis.  North of this ridge was a westerly flow with an upper level disturbance heading east out of the Northern Plains per water vapor satellite imagery.  850mb temperatures as of 3 PM ranged from +20 to +22C in Southern Minnesota to +14C in Northeast Minnesota to +16 to +18C in Western, Central, and Eastern Minnesota.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Tonight (July 18th)

Scattered rain showers will continue to develop at times in Eastcentral Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin with dry weather for Northern Minnesota, North Shore, and Arrowhead.  Partly-mostly cloudy skies are expected with lows in the 50s and 60s, but a few spots up North might drop into the 40s.  Winds will be out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph with stronger gusts near the head of Lake Superior.

-Tonight’s low temperature forecast

Thursday and Thursday Night (July 19th)

High pressure will be centered to our north/east which will keep pleasant temperatures and comfortable humidity in our area.  Highs Tomorrow will be in the 70s and 80s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 50s and 60s.  Dew points should range from 50 to around 60 degrees, the lowest dew points will be in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Winds will be out of the east at 5 to 15 mph.

-Thursday’s high temperature forecast

Extended Forecast, Friday-Sunday (July 20th-22nd)

Warm and more humid conditions will be found in the Northland on Friday.  High temperatures are forecast to be in the 80s, perhaps into the lower 90s with dew points climbing into the 60s.  We will see a cold front settle south and stall out somewhere in Minnesota this weekend while another high builds in from Ontario Canada.  The greatest chance for showers and thunderstorms looks like it will be west-south of our area for Saturday and Sunday, but the period from Friday into Saturday Morning could bring with it some showers or thunderstorms in portions of the Northland.  High temperatures for Saturday and Sunday will be in the 70s and 80s with lows Saturday Night in the 50s and 60s.

-A minimal (5% chance) for severe thunderstorms in portions of Minnesota and extreme Northwest Wisconsin for Friday and Friday Night.  (SPC)

Looks dry next Monday (23rd), and again from the 26th-28th.  The period from Tuesday-Wednesday, July 24-25 could be wet at times with possible showers or thunderstorms as a cold front heads through the Upper Midwest.  Temperatures will be near to above average through mid-week with normal to perhaps below normal temperatures for late next week.
