Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
A potent upper level low system has been swinging south/east through the Northland Today. Cold temperatures aloft (H5 temps around -18C) and warmer air near the surface led to the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms Today. Some of the storms contained heavy downpours with >1.00″ rainfall totals since last night in the Arrowhead of Minnesota, including most of Cook County and Northern parts of Lake County. Other more isolated pockets of heavy rain occurred in parts of Northwest Wisconsin Today. The setup was also favorable for the development of waterspouts Today over Western Lake Superior. One waterspout occurred around 11 AM Today near Park Point (Duluth, MN) Unseasonably warm water temperatures combined with the cold temperatures aloft was all that was needed for the spin-up of these spouts Today. High temperatures Today were in the 60s to lower 70s with partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies. Winds were out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph with gusts >30mph closer to Lake Superior.
Today’s Upper Level Analysis:
An upper trough/low covered the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and parts of Eastcentral Canada per water vapor satellite imagery and RAP model analysis while an upper level ridge covered the most of the Western U.S. into Texas. 850mb temperatures as of 4 PM ranged from +8 to +10C in Northern/Eastern Minnesota to +12 to +14C in Central and Southern Minnesota.
Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Tonight (August 9th)
Strong high pressure of around 1025mb will be centered north of Minnesota Tonight while an upper low exits to our south/east. Spotty rain showers will come to an end during the Evening with mainly dry conditions Overnight with patchy fog. Skies will become partly cloudy with lows in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph with gusts over 30 mph closer to Lake Superior, especially during the Evening.
Friday and Friday Night (August 10th)
High pressure will bring dry weather to our area this period. Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected with highs Tomorrow in the 60s and 70s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 40s and 50s. North, east, or west winds are forecast at 10 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast, Saturday through Monday (August 11th-13th)
Mainly dry conditions should continue for most of this period, but as we get into Sunday and Monday there will be a potential for a few spotty showers or isolated thunderstorms as a weak boundary slips south/east into our area. High temperatures will be mainly in the 70s through this period with lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night generally in the 50s.
Long Range Forecast (August 14th-19th)
The computer models seem to be in okay agreement for next Tuesday-Wednesday (14th-15th) after that model agreement falls off from the 16th-19th. It continues to look like will see at least a brief pattern change with more of a SW upper level flow developing, but this may not last very long should the 12z ECMWF and GFS models verify. Low pressure is forecast to pass west-north of our area sometime between the 15th-18th with a cold front moving through the Upper Midwest…This system could bring some showers or thunderstorms to our area during the middle/end of next week. Note: Should the 12z model runs verify, then a shot of real cool temperatures would push into the Upper Midwest late next week with a possible frost threat as well, this would be more toward the Friday-Saturday time range (August 17-18) Stay tuned!
