*Here’s a pretty cool enhanced satellite loop from last night’s MCS that rolled south/southeast though Minnesota.  Notice how this blob over Minnesota couldn’t move more toward the east, it’s forced on a more southerly track due to an upper level ridge parked over the Central Great Lakes.

Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

A soupy day with a ton of low level moisture in place with dew points in the tropical mid 60s to around 70 degrees.  Clouds were rather abundant though with only far Northern Minnesota seeing any decent amount of sunshine Today.  High temperatures were in the 70s and 80s with south or east winds at 5 to 15 mph.  Showers and thunderstorms with torrential rain which impacted parts of the Northland earlier in the day gave way to a few spotty Afternoon showers, but so far nothing heavy has developed.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight through Sunday Night (July 13th-14th)

A frontal boundary will remain nearly stationary across Northcentral Minnesota or perhaps a little more to the west/north.  Abundant moisture will be found throughout the Northland with dew points holding in the 60s and lower 70s with PWS extremely high ranging from 1.25″-2.00″+  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected this period with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing at times.  Note:  Northcentral Minnesota, including the Brainerd Lakes, Iron Range, Borderland, and Arrowhead have the best chance at getting more significant amounts of rain during this period with lower chances for Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  The threat for severe thunderstorms is on the low side with generally weak instability and shear in place.  By far the heavy rain potential will be the thing to worry about in parts of the Northland.

Low temperatures Tonight and Sunday Night will mainly be in the 60s with highs on Sunday in the 70s and 80s.  Winds will be out of the south or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (July 15th-17th)

Looks like a warm and muggy early-mid week in the Northland.  A front will be stalled out to our west/north but this boundary may begin to shift a bit toward the SE from late Tuesday into Wednesday.  A few showers or thunderstorms might occur at times, but these rain chances aren’t overly impressive.  High temperatures will be in the 80s with a chance at seeing some 90s especially on Tuesday.  Low temperatures Monday Night and Tuesday Night will be in the 60s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(July 18th-22nd)

A few showers or thunderstorms are possible next Thursday-Friday (15th-16th) as a cold front and area of low pressure pass through the Upper Midwest.  A cooler and drier airmass builds into the Northland behind this front for next weekend (20th-21st)  Near to above average temperatures are forecast during this period.
