*RAP model did a nice job with last night’s low temperature forecast so here’s what the 21z run shows for low temperatures Tonight.  The white shaded area represents low temperatures of 30 below to around 40 below Tonight.  The 30 below contour touches Duluth, I’m not going quite that cold for Tonight, but no matter what it’s going to be a brutally cold night.  Stay inside if you can.

*So far this month there have been 22 dates with a sub-zero low temperature.  In December 2012 we had a total of 6 dates with a minimum temperature of 0F or colder.

*4 days so far this month with a high temperature of 0F or colder.

*The coldest temperature we had last winter was -22F which occurred on February 1.  I think will beat that this winter.

*WIND CHILL WARNING includes the cities of Duluth and Superior*

A wind chill warning is in effect for all of Northeast Minnesota and a small part of Northwest Wisconsin from 10 PM Tonight until 12 PM CST Tuesday.

Counties included in the warning:  Koochiching…Itasca…Cass…Crow Wing…Aitkin…Pine…Carlton…St. Louis…Lake…Cook…and Douglas.

Some cities included in the warning:  International Falls…Grand Rapids…Pine River…Brainerd…Aitkin…Hinckley…Cloquet…Duluth…Hibbing…Ely…Crane Lake…Two Harbors…Silver Bay…Grand Marais…Superior…and Solon Springs.

Impacts:  Wind chill values of 35 below to 45 below with some locales in far Northern Minnesota as low as 50 below.  Exposed flesh could freeze in a matter of minutes under these conditions.

Impacts:  Wind chill values of 25 below to 35 below.  Exposed flesh will be susceptible to frost bite in 10 to 15 minutes.

Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

A weak area of low pressure averaging 1020mb was over Northeast Nebraska late This Afternoon with high pressure sprawled out to our northwest/north.  Flurries and a little bit of light snow has been occurring Today generally along and south of Highway 2 due to that weak system passing well to our south Today. Partly to mostly cloudy skies were common with high temperatures only in the single digits below zero. Winds were out of the west or northwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (December 30)

Bitterly cold temperatures will occur once again Tonight with high pressure in control.  Any lingering flurries and light snow will come to an end early This Evening with clear to partly cloudy skies occurring for the remainder of the night.  Low temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s below zero with 40s below in some parts of Northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the west or northwest at 5 to around 15 mph.

*Expected wind chills from late This Evening through Tuesday Morning.















New Year’s Eve Day/Night (December 31)

2013 will end on a very cold note but it will be mainly dry.  Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected with highs only in the single digits and teens below zero with lows in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.  Northwest or north winds are expected at 5 to around 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

New Year’s Day through Friday (January 1-3)

Still looks very cold Wednesday and Thursday with only slight improvement expected on Friday.  Lake effect snow showers could increase a bit from Wednesday into Thursday along the South Shore of Lake Superior as north winds develop behind a storm system which will be moving east/northeast toward the Ohio Valley.  It looks mainly dry for areas away from the South Shore on Wednesday and Thursday.  Some light snow could move into our by Friday as a low pressure system approaches from the Western U.S.  High temperatures on Wednesday will be in the single digits below to around 10 above.  Highs on Thursday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero.  Highs on Friday will be in the single digits and teens. Low temperatures Wednesday Night and Thursday Night will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 4-9)

Some light snow is possible on Saturday (4th) as low pressure passes through the Upper Midwest and Northern Great Lakes.  Otherwise the rest of this period looks mainly dry at the moment.  Near average temperatures are possible on Saturday, after that it looks like temperatures will go below average once again with the possibility of a major shot of cold air sometime between the 5th-7th.
