Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Brutally cold temperatures and wind chills across the Northland Today as the polar vortex moves to a position between Central Ontario and Lake Michigan as of late Afternoon with a 4980 thickness, incredible!
We are now on the west side of this vortex with super cold air still in place with both 850mb and 925mb temperatures of around -30C as of 3 PM. The 32F temperature contour is as far south as Central Texas, Southern Louisiana, and Central Georgia while the 0F temperature contour stretches from Central Missouri to Eastern Ohio. Very impressive.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies were found in our area Today with even some light snow flurries falling at times. Highs were only in the teens to around 20 below with northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts. Late Afternoon wind chills in the 30s and 40s below.

Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills persist Tonight under clear to partly cloudy skies. Lows will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below with a few locations possibly dropping into the minus 40s. Northwest winds are forecast at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts especially near Lake Superior.

Tuesday and Tuesday Night (January 7)
Still very cold this period although daytime highs will be slightly warmer than what we saw Today. Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected with highs ranging from around zero to the teens below. Lows will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below with a few locales possibly tanking into the minus 40s once again. Winds will be out of the west or northwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday through Friday (January 8-10)
A warming trend will take place during this period as the flow aloft turns more westerly instead of the current NNW flow. Wednesday looks dry. Could see some flurries or snow showers around the area for Thursday and Friday but this doesn’t look like a real big deal at the moment. Highs on Wednesday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Highs on Thursday will be in the teens. Highs on Friday will be in the teens and 20s. Lows Wednesday Night will be in the teens and 20s below. Lows Thursday Night will be in the single digits and teens.

Near to above average temperatures are forecast on the 11th-12th. After that it looks like will return to either near average or below average temperatures. A few minor snow events could hit the Northland during this period, but no major storms are expected at this time.
