Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Arctic high pressure averaging 1044mb covered the Central Plains Today. A warm front was dropping southeast into the Northern Plains late This Afternoon with strong 2-hour pressure falls of 3-5mb occurring ahead of this warm front over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Lots of sunshine in our area Today with very cold temperatures which were in the single digits below zero. Winds were out of the west or southwest at 5 to 15 mph.
Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 23)
Clouds will be on the increase This Evening with a period of snow spreading south/southeast across the Northland between 10 PM-6 AM. The snow shouldn’t last more than 1-2 hours in any given location though. Low temperatures will occur This Evening when single digits, teens, and even a few 20s below will be common. Strong warm air advection and a 40-50+ knot low level jet will result in rising temperatures Overnight, most locations should be in the single digits below to 10 above range by daybreak. Winds will be out of the south or west at 10 to 20 mph with a few higher gusts possible. Areas of blowing snow could develop especially in open country Tonight.
Note: Snowfall accumulations Tonight will generally range from 0.5″ to 2.5″.
Here’s the 18z HopWRF model projected snowfall totals map for Tonight, ending at 6 AM Friday. Using a 13:1 ratio and this model comes up with about a 1.0″-2.5″ snowfall across much of the Northland by Friday AM. Use caution traveling to work or school on Friday.
Friday and Friday Night (January 24)
A brief thaw takes place Tomorrow as high temperatures get into the 20s with teens in far Northern Minnesota and possibly a few 30s in Southern areas. A warm front exits to our south/east early Tomorrow, and then will see a cold front drop south and through the Northland Friday Afternoon as deep low pressure remains well to our north.
Another round of snow showers will likely occur from late Friday Morning into Friday Evening due to the southward advancing cold front.
Low temperatures Tomorrow Night will range from the teens below to single digits above zero. Winds will be out of the west or northwest at 10 to 25 mph.
Note: Snowfall accumulations Friday Afternoon/Evening will range from 0.5″-2.0″
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Saturday through Monday (January 25-27)
Saturday should be dry but cold as we get clipped by another surge of arctic air, although the heart of this next batch of frigid air should stay just north/east of the Northland, but it will still be cold in our area. Highs on Saturday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero with lows ranging from the teens below to single digits above zero.
A pretty strong clipper system is forecast to track southeast across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest from Saturday Night into Sunday Morning, this clipper deepens as it tracks through the Southern Great Lakes region during the day Sunday. Some snow with some accumulation could affect portions of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin beginning late Saturday Night and continuing into Sunday depending on the final track this low pressure takes. Stay tuned. Note: East winds could also develop Sunday Morning, but the amount of ice that covers Lake Superior will likely hinder lake effect/enhanced snow for areas near Lake Superior. Highs on Sunday will be in the single digits below to the teens above zero. Lows Sunday Night fall into the teens, 20s, and 30s below as another round of dangerously cold air spreads into the Upper Midwest.
Monday looks downright nasty with frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Highs will range from around 15 below to 0 with wind chills possibly as low as the 30s and 40s below during the day.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 28-February 2)
Below average temperatures will continue through this period and we could also see a minor snow event or 2 sometime around the 29th-31st.
