Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

An area of low pressure averaging 1014mb was near Thunder Bay Ontario Canada late This Afternoon with high pressure of 1024mb covering the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains. An area of light snow affected portions of the Northland especially before 2 PM Today.  This was a fluffy snow (large flakes) which resulted in a bit more accumulation than what was expected 24 hours ago.  Remember larger snowflakes accumulate more quickly than small ones.  Snowfall totals were generally around 1″, but there were a few 2-3″ reports north of the Twin Ports.  High temperatures Today were in the single digits and teens with southwest or northwest winds at 5 to around 20 mph.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 1)

High pressure will be building into the Upper Midwest which will result in skies becoming mostly clear to partly cloudy in our area during the night.  Any lingering flurries or snow showers should come to an end early This Evening.  Lows Tonight will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below with a few spots up north possibly falling into the negative 30s.  Winds will be out of the northwest or west at 5 to 15 mph.

*Area in light blue on the map is in a wind chill advisory from mid Evening through Sunday AM.  Source, NWS hazards map.

Sunday and Sunday Night (February 2)

Clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast this period with highs in the single digits and teens with lows in the single digits, teens, and 20s below.  Southwest winds are expected at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (February 3-5)

Still looks mainly dry in our area during this period with high temperatures in the teens to around 20 degrees on Monday and in the single digits below to around 10 above zero on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Low temperatures will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below both Monday Night and Tuesday Night.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(February 6-11)

More of the same.  Mainly dry with below average temperatures through this period.  It should be noted, however, that the GFS model for the past few days has been showing at least a little bit of snow around the Northland between the 7th-9th as a storm system comes out of the Rockies, but I don’t think this system will get close enough to our area to bring us any snow. The pattern just isn’t favorable for much snow in Northeast Minnesota or Northwest Wisconsin.
