Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 15)

High pressure will move into Ontario Tonight while low pressure over Iowa slides southeast through the night.  The trough over Central Minnesota late This Afternoon will also move south/east Tonight.  Snow will continue through about mid Evening in Northeast and Eastern Minnesota and over Northwest Wisconsin. Total event accumulations will range from 1″ to as much as 8″ Tonight with the highest amounts found over the Arrowhead and also along portions of the North Shore of Lake Superior.

By late Tonight expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with flurries or snow showers still possible mainly along the South Shore of Lake Superior.  Low temperatures will range from the teens below to single digits above zero.  Winds will be out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday and Sunday Night (February 16)

Dry weather is expected Tomorrow with high pressure off to our north.  Temperatures Sunday and Sunday Night will range from the single digits to around 20 degrees.  Clouds will increase Sunday Evening as low pressure moves into the Northern Plains.  Snow will overspread the Northland late Tomorrow Night as the system over the Northern Plains marches east.  Some of the snow could be moderate to even heavy at times well after Midnight Tomorrow Night.  Winds during this period will be out of the south or east at 5 to around 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (February 17-19)

A vigorous weather system will be moving through the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes on Monday.  This system will bring widespread snow to NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin Monday Morning with the snow tapering off from west to east by Monday Afternoon.

The period from Monday Night through Wednesday looks generally dry at this time although there will be one or two fast moving areas of low pressure that will pass north of our area, so a few snow showers can’t totally be ruled out from time to time, but no major accumulations are anticipated at this time.

High temperatures from Monday through Wednesday are forecast to be in the 20s and 30s with lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(February 20-25)

The computer models are starting to come into better agreement during this period.  It’s looking less likely now that a significant storm will impact the Upper Midwest during the 20th-23rd time frame, with that said this period still needs to be monitored since it is still a few days away and the computer models could easily start to trend toward a stormier pattern once again.  Stay tuned.  Near to above average temperatures are forecast on the 20th with near to below average temperatures from the 21st-25th.
