Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

March begins where February ended and that’s with insane amounts of cold air.  This airmass is simply ridiculous for the time of year.  Late Afternoon 850mb temperatures were in the -28 to -32C range across the Northland with temperatures as of 3 PM in the 0 to 10 below range.  Sky conditions were mostly sunny to partly cloudy Today and winds were out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (March 1)

Dangerously cold Tonight.  Low temperatures will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below zero with even a few minus 40s not out of the question in the typical cold spots.  Clear to partly cloudy skies will continue along with northwest winds at around 10 mph with higher gusts.

Same thing different day.  More wind chill headlines in effect Tonight-Sunday AM across all of Minnesota and most of Wisconsin.  Source, hamweather.com

Sunday and Sunday Night (March 2)

High pressure dominates our weather this period.  Clear-partly cloudy skies will continue with highs only in the single digits below to single digits above zero.  Lows will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.  West or northwest winds can be expected at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (March 3-5)

For the most part this period looks dry but a little bit of light snow could affect portions of the Northland Monday Night/early Tuesday as a weak disturbance drops SE out of the Northern Plains.  High temperatures will be in the single digits and teens from Monday-Wednesday, a few spots might make a run at 20 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday.  Lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night will be in the single digits and teens below zero to the single digits above zero.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(March 6-11)

Below average temperatures are forecast to continue this period although the extreme cold like were seeing now should retreat back into Canada, so yes we should warmup a bit, but I still don’t see any significant thaw anytime soon.  Might get a little bit of snow around the 6th-7th, and possibly again toward the 10th-11th, but those events don’t look very impressive at the moment.
