Weather Summary for December 6, 2014
Location:  Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Not a bad early December day as high pressure of 1038mb passes through the Upper Midwest Today.  Sky conditions ranged from mostly cloudy to mostly sunny with highs in the 20s to lower 30s.  Winds were light and generally out of the south or southeast.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (December 6)

Low pressure will track out of southwest Canada and into southern Saskatchewan by daybreak.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found over the Northland Tonight with some light snow or a wintry mix of precipitation possible at times mainly over western areas.  Low temperatures will be in the teens and 20s as winds remain out of the south or southeast at 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday and Sunday Night (December 7)

Low pressure over southern Saskatchewan Tomorrow Morning will move to the Ontario-Minnesota border by Monday A.M.  This system will bring a round of wintry precipitation to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin on Sunday.

Temperatures of 0 to +4C at 850mb will be in place for most of Sunday while surface temperatures stay below the freezing mark — this will probably result in a mix bag of precipitation types ranging from sleet to snow to freezing rain.  The 850mb temperatures will fall to -4 to 0C,  however, and once that happens the winter mix of precipitation will turn over to all snow.

Highs on Sunday will be in the 20s and 30s with steady temperatures Sunday Night.  South or southeast winds Tomorrow at 10 to 25 mph will become south or southwest Tomorrow Night at 10 to 20 mph.

Note:  Total snowfall accumulations from Sunday through Monday should be in the 1-3″ range in the Northland with higher amounts possible in the Arrowhead and along the Minnesota-Ontario border.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (December 8-10)

Low pressure will pass north/east of the area on Monday.  Snow showers and flurries will likely linger across the Northland on Monday with dry weather returning from Monday Night through Wednesday.

High temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s on Monday; cooling to the teens and 20s on Tuesday; highs on Wednesday will be in the 20s and 30s.  Lows Monday Night will range from the single digits below to teens above zero.  Lows Tuesday Night will be in the single digits and teens.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(December 11-16)

An upper level trough sets up across the Western U.S. through this period while an upper level ridge and warm southwesterly breezes develop across the Plains and western Great Lakes or to the east of that upper trough.

Some rain is possible from the 13th-15th…It’s way too early to say with much certainty whether or not this rain would be significant or just nuisance type stuff.  Either way expect warm December temperatures and plenty of snow melt by late next week/weekend.

The bigger story will be the well advertised warmup which takes hold from the 11th-16th.  Daytime highs and nighttime lows should be well above seasonal averages with possible record breaking warmth.
